The film was originally worked out as a standalone film with no connection to the Grand Theft Auto-franchise, as it was first known as "Rockstar Games' Untitled 2013 Gangster Film".
Will Smith originally requested whether it was possible if he could play the part of Franklin, but Vicellous Reon Shannon was already cast and Rockstar Games said that he would have refused him either way because he thought it might look too similar like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004)' if Smith was cast.
Kevin Spacey revealed that he played the role of Michael in the same way as James Woods portrayed Det. Mike Torino in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004).
Rockstar Games originally wanted to have the film ready in 2012, but the scheduling conflicts of L.A. Noire (2011) caused delayment. This caused that the film was actually shot in the summer of 2012, something which Rockstar Games was very happy about.
Rockstar Games said that Grand Theft Auto V (2013) will be 40% thematic about the crime, greed and violence in Los Santos and will be 60% focus on cinematography, sound design and camera angles.

Rockstar Games said that he took a month to work with all the actors for several days. He also helped them give the equipment they needed to get into shape for the role. Kevin Spacey lived for two weeks in Rockstar Games' big house in Beverly Hills without his family (in order to feel how it feels to have richness except the people you love, similar to being rich as being unhappy as in the film). James Gandolfini traveled in a camper for several days in hot weather with only bottles of beer and some sausages. Vicellous Reon Shannon analyzed the car industry and watched Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004).
One of the most expensive movies ever made (as of August 2013), with an estimated budget of US $280,000,000.
The three main actors: Kevin Spacey, James Gandolfini and Vicellous Reon Shannon are actors Rockstar Games has never worked with before.
